A dog squinting its eyesJust like humans, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies or allergies that persist throughout the year. Pet allergies usually manifest as itchy or inflamed skin, rather than sneezing and watery eyes that people are prone too.

Seasonal pet allergies is one of the most common conditions we see in our veterinary practice. Symptoms can be intense and extremely uncomfortable for pets, and can affect their quality of life.

Allergies cannot be cured, but they can be effectively managed. With knowledge, patience and support from The Bluffs Pet Clinic, you’ll be on the right track to managing seasonal pet allergies in no time.

Itchy and Scratchy

Seasonal pet allergies can strike at any time, but often intensify during the spring, summer, and fall blooming season. These environmental allergies trigger a set of symptoms known as allergic dermatitis.

Allergies can make your pet miserable. Look for the following signs:

  • Intense itching
  • Red, blotchy skin
  • Itchy or red ears
  • Head shaking
  • Biting or chewing at the skin, especially the feet, belly, groin, or armpits
  • Patches of hair loss
  • Open sores and scabs
  • Rubbing against furniture or carpet

Treating Seasonal Pet Allergies

If you suspect your pet has allergies, it’s important to see your pet’s veterinarian right away. Besides causing serious discomfort for your pet, prolonged untreated allergies can weaken your pet’s immune system and cause secondary infections. Generally, your veterinarian can begin to determine a diagnosis from your pet’s physical exam and your observations of your pet’s behavior at home.

Determining the cause of allergies is a game of elimination, and can take patience. Once we find the cause of your pet’s allergies, there are many treatment options available. These may include oral and topical medications, environmental management, antihistamines, and allergy shots.

Help At Home

There are several things you can do at home to help manage your pet’s allergies. Though not a substitute for veterinary treatment, these ideas can work in tandem with other therapies to alleviate your pet’s symptoms.

  • Bathe your pet regularly with a veterinary shampoo
  • Soak your pet’s feet after she comes in from time outside, and dry thoroughly. Keep the hair in between toes trimmed
  • Dust and vacuum your home regularly and wash all pet bedding weekly
  • Supplement your pet’s diet with an omega-3 fatty acids to support skin condition
  • Follow your veterinarian’s dietary recommendations

By working together we can help your pet with seasonal allergies to feel her best. Please schedule an appointment or contact us with any questions.
