Many of our clientele have been drawn in to the grain free pet food fad, but the truth is that this trend may not be a great one. So how are you to know? Let <\/span><a href=\"\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bluffs Pet Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help you understand how to make the best diet choices for your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Potential Problem with Grain Free Pet Food<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popularity of grain free pet food has been on the rise over the last decade or so thanks to the advent of some very heavily and successfully marketed pet food brands. Grain has been deemed a filler ingredient and blamed for a number of health conditions. In reality, very few pet health problems are related to grain and from a nutritional standpoint grain can even be a valuable ingredient when properly utilized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the veterinary community has ignored the grain free fad as a harmless marketing gimmick until recently. Over the last few years we have been noticing an increase in the diagnosis of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/conditions\/cardiovascular\/c_dg_cardiomyopathy_dilated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This fatal heart condition has long been recognized in certain dog breeds, but we have been seeing it more often in breeds that are not commonly affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trend caught the attention of the FDA. They recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-issues-third-status-report-investigation-potential-connection-between-certain-diets-and-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a statement on their findings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What all the dogs affected by DCM had in common was their diet. Dogs being fed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetnutrition.tufts.edu\/2018\/06\/a-broken-heart-risk-of-heart-disease-in-boutique-or-grain-free-diets-and-exotic-ingredients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBEG\u201d diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (those classified as boutique, exotic ingredients, and grain free).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time we don\u2019t know why or what is causing this disease to appear in some dogs, but we do know that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA\u2019s findings correlate the development of DCM with the feeding of BEG diets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DCM can be a fatal disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DCM is not easily detectable until the disease is in its late stages<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point we can no longer look at the grain free pet food fad as harmless. It appears that in some way that we have yet to fully understand it is actually hurting some pets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selecting the Best<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you sort through all the information out there? For starters, because we do not yet know the specific factors in certain grain-free foods that lead to health problems, it\u2019s best to stick to those diets that have not been implicated in the FDA investigation. These include veterinary-trusted brands such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill\u2019s Science Diet\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Canin\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purina Pro Plan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsava.org\/wsava\/media\/arpita-and-emma-editorial\/selecting-the-best-food-for-your-pet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing a new pet food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, other important factors to consider include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the diet has been formulated to meet requirements or tested through feeding trials (look at the AAFCO statement to find this information).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the company employs a full time nutritionist with a PhD in animal nutrition or veterinary board certification (ACVN or ECVCN).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What life stage the food has been formulated for.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, <\/span><a href=\"\/veterinarians-bluffs-pet-clinic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our dedicated team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is always here to help you make the best choices when it comes to your pet.
