Or, have you ever woken up in the morning to discover that your kitty has urinated on your bed or shoes, instead of in the litter box?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If so, you may be scratching your head in confusion, or even tearing out your hair in frustration. But whatever your reaction, chances are your pet is experiencing anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/a-gentle-approach-to-pet-care-announcing-our-fear-free-certification\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing fear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anxiety in pets is a complicated problem. These feelings, whatever their cause, often manifest themselves in undesirable behaviors of all kinds. But before you take drastic measures, know that there are steps you can take to alleviate your sweet pet\u2019s fear and help her improve her anxious behaviors. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of Anxiety in Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety in pets is common, and some of the most common signs are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to escape \u2013 frantic scratching at doors and windows and digging under fences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destructive behavior like chewing furniture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House soiling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coprophagia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trembling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocalization<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive panting or drooling<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that thunderstorm example? Causes of anxiety in pets may not make sense to you, and may have a wide range of causes. Often, changes in a pet\u2019s routine may cause anxiety. A few common causes of anxiety in pets are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving homes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new baby in the house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/so-you-adopted-a-new-petnow-what\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loud noises, such as fireworks or thunderstorms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/how-to-de-stress-your-pets-visit-to-the-clinic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling in the car<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separation from you<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Help Your Pet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As conscientious pet owners, we want to help our pets to feel better. Here are a few things you can do:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rule out medical problems \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sometimes, anxious or undesirable behavior can be the result of an illness or injury that has gone undetected by the pet owner. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/olsr1.appointmaster.com\/#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule an appointment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to rule out any medical problems in your pet. For example, inappropriate urination in cats often is the result of a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Form a plan \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We can work with you to <\/span><a href=\"\/veterinary-services\/behavioral-consultations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discuss your pet\u2019s anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and form a plan to address it. Behavior modification training is one approach, as is anxiety reducing medication. These two modalities are often used in conjunction to address anxiety in pets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seek professional guidance \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Behavior issues are complex. To make matters worse, sometimes medical problems cause behavioral habits, which need to be addressed on many levels. We often work with certified professional trainers or veterinary behaviorists to address pet anxiety problems. This team approach can be a great support for you, and teach you how to help your pet best. Ask us for a referral. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Patience and positivity \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Behavior problems stemming from anxiety in pets&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be frustrating. Remember that your pet should never be scolded or&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">punished for anxiety related behaviors. This will only make these&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behaviors worse and more difficult to treat. Further, \u201cdesensitization\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by repeatedly exposing your pet to the object of their fear can make&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things worse if not done carefully with lots of positive reinforcement&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and should not be attempted without professional help. Be patient and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive.
