But bad breath can signify deeper dental problems than a simple treat can fix \u2013 namely pet periodontal disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problems with <\/span><a href=\"\/veterinary-services\/veterinary-dental-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">periodontal disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go further than bad breath. With over 85% of pets affected by the time they reach 3 years of age, it\u2019s no surprise that this topic gets a lot of our attention. Also known as dental disease, periodontal disease in pets can cause bleeding gums, tooth loss, and even systemic disease of the heart, liver, and kidneys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, periodontal disease is preventable. We know that conscientious pet owners want to do the best they can for their pets. Here\u2019s some information to help you do just that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Periodontal Disease Happens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periodontal disease in pets is the progressive inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth. Here\u2019s how it workds:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It starts when bacteria in the mouth form plaque that sticks to the teeth. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minerals in your pet\u2019s saliva then bond with the plaque, causing it to harden into tartar. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacteria that cling to the plaque and tartar then work their way under your pet\u2019s gum line, causing gum inflammation (gingivitis). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If tartar is not controlled, it can progress to periodontitis. When this happens, bacteria destroy the supporting structures of the tooth, including the soft tissues surrounding it, the root, and the bone below. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of Periodontal Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet owners sometimes have a difficult time noticing the first signs of dental disease. We recommend <\/span><a href=\"\/for-lifelong-health-put-pet-wellness-first\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual preventive care visits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to spot the signs of dental disease early and treat small problems before they become advanced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs to look for include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bad breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red or bleeding gums<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pawing at the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or sensitivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of interest in chew toys<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty eating (sometimes looks like messy eating)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chewing on one side of the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden preference for soft food<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is rare that an animal will actually stop eating from dental disease, but you may notice changes in their interest or comfort while eating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating and Preventing Periodontal Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although dental disease is common, the good news is that it is preventable. Treatment and prevention of dental disease can add years to your pet\u2019s life and help keep them comfortable and healthy.
